Cavalaire-sur-Mer occupies a sheltered bay at the southwestern edge of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, framed by the Massif des Maures to the north and the Corniche des Maures coastline to the east. The town has a distinctly residential character compared to its more commercialised neighbours, attracting buyers who want direct access to the Gulf without the congestion of Saint-Tropez itself. The bay at Gigaro, within the commune, sits within the protected Domaine du Rayol corridor.

The town centre along the port offers a daily market, several waterfront restaurants, and a sandy beach stretching over four kilometres. La Croix-Valmer and its Gigaro beach are a short drive east.
