Tarascon sits on the west bank of the Rhône in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, directly across the river from Beaucaire and within the broader orbit of Arles, one of the most historically significant cities in southern France. The town is defined by its medieval Château du Roi René, a remarkably intact 15th-century fortress rising directly from the riverbank, and by a landscape where the Alpilles, the Camargue, and the Crau plain converge within a short radius.

Daily life here draws on the resources of Arles, roughly five kilometres away, where the weekly Saturday market on the Boulevard des Lices, the Musée Départemental Arles Antique, and restaurants such as Le Galoubet and L’Atelier de Jean-Luc Rabanel anchor a genuinely cultured provincial life.
