Arles occupies a singular position in the cultural geography of southern France. A Roman provincial capital whose amphitheatre and theatre remain in active use, the city carries its history without being defined by it. The old town, enclosed within its ancient walls, is compact and walkable, with a character shaped equally by its position at the gateway to the Camargue and its long association with artists, most famously Van Gogh, who produced over 300 works here.

Daily life centres on the Place de la République and the Boulevard des Lices, where the Saturday market is one of the largest and best-regarded in Provence. Arles is served by its own SNCF station with direct TGV connections to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately four hours and to Marseille Saint-Charles in under an hour. Marseille Provence Airport is approximately 70 kilometres away, around 50 minutes by car, offering extensive European and international routes. Montpellier Airport provides an alternative at a similar distance to the west. The A54 and A9 motorways give straightforward road access to Marseille, Montpellier, and the broader Mediterranean coast.
