Vence is a medieval hilltop town in the Alpes-Maritimes, sitting at roughly 325 metres above sea level between the coastal strip and the pre-Alpine foothills. Its old town, enclosed by Roman-era ramparts, has drawn artists and intellectuals for generations, most famously Henri Matisse, who designed the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the late 1940s. The surrounding countryside is characterised by garrigue, olive groves, and the dramatic limestone formations of the Baous, giving the area a distinctly different character from the coastal resorts below.
Daily life in Vence centres on the Place du Grand Jardin and the covered market, which runs several mornings a week. The old town has a solid range of restaurants, including the well-regarded La Farigoulette. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, home to the Fondation Maeght, is five minutes by car. Antibes and its market are around 25 minutes away.
Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 25 kilometres from Vence, reachable in 20 to 30 minutes by car depending on traffic, with direct connections to most major European cities and long-haul routes. The A8 motorway is accessible via Cagnes-sur-Mer, around 15 minutes away, linking to Monaco in under 40 minutes and to Aix-en-Provence in roughly 90 minutes. The nearest TGV station is Nice-Ville, connecting to Paris in approximately five and a half hours.
