Vence is a medieval hilltop town in the Alpes-Maritimes, sitting at roughly 325 metres above sea level between the coastal strip and the pre-Alpine foothills. Its old town, enclosed by Roman-era ramparts, has attracted artists and intellectuals for generations, most visibly Henri Matisse, who designed the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the late 1940s. The surrounding countryside is characterised by terraced olive groves, dry-stone walls, and long views south toward the Mediterranean.

Daily life in Vence centres on the Place du Grand Jardin market and the old town’s covered market hall. The restaurant scene includes solid Provençal cooking at La Litote and Les Agapes. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with its galleries and the Fondation Maeght, is a five-minute drive. Cagnes-sur-Mer and its beach are approximately 15 minutes by car.

Vence sits roughly 25 kilometres northwest of Nice, accessible by bus via Cagnes-sur-Mer or by car in around 35 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 30 kilometres away, typically 35 to 45 minutes by car, with direct connections to most major European cities and intercontinental routes. The A8 motorway, accessed via Cagnes-sur-Mer, links the area to Monaco, Cannes, and Aix-en-Provence.
