Sintra’s allure begins with its breathtaking scenery—dense forests, misty mountains, and towering palaces that seem to emerge from the clouds. The jewel in its crown, the Palácio da Pena, with its striking mix of Gothic, Renaissance, Moorish, and Manueline architectural styles, is a marvel that was once a favored retreat of Queen Maria II and King Ferdinand II. These royal patrons, who helped transform Sintra into a romantic haven, drew inspiration from the surrounding landscapes, commissioning lavish estates that would later become iconic landmarks, like the Quinta da Regaleira with its mysterious Initiation Well and gardens steeped in symbolism.
This Charming Chalet dating back to 1889, commissioned by Mr. Possidónio de Castro, a recognized monarchist who frequently accompanied King D. Carlos.
The chalet has been fully restored, while maintaining the original design from the late 19th century. With an extraordinary loocation in the historic center of the village of Sintra, it still benefits from a lot of tranquility as it is situated on a private street with restricted access for residents.
The property stands out for its romantic lines typical of Sintra architecture, preserving the features of noble houses from that era, such as heigh ceilings with double-height , decorative plaster details on the ceilings, cornices and wainscoting, boiseries on the walls, an old central staircase, a roof constructed with 4 slopes and a solid wood flooring.
On the exterior, all windows and doors have been replaced, while maintaining the features of the originals , in wood with double glazing.
On the main floor, there is a spacious living room with direct access to the garden, a library, a dining room and a fully equipped kitchen.
The second floor is occupied by a spacious master suite with a walk-in closet and stunning views over Sintra mountains.
The upper floor features two additional suites, both with mountain views, and on sunny days, the sea can be seen in the distance.
The basement includes a cinema room, a bedroom or lounge area with access to the garden, a bathroom and a wine cellar.
This house is a five-minute walk from Sintra Town Palace, 10 minutes from the train station, a 20-minute drive from the beaches and 30 minutes from Lisbon airport.
Sintra is a truly magical place, a UNESCO World Heritage site where fairytale landscapes and historical treasures transport visitors into another time. Nestled between the lush hills of the Serra de Sintra and the Atlantic Ocean, this enchanting town has, for centuries, captivated the imaginations of royalty, artists, and writers alike.
Sintra’s beauty and atmosphere of mystery have long inspired creative minds. Lord Byron famously referred to Sintra as a “glorious Eden,” enchanted by its beauty. The mystique of its palaces and forests influenced his writings, leaving a poetic legacy woven into Sintra’s charm. Another literary giant, Eça de Queirós, one of Portugal’s most beloved novelists, was similarly inspired, drawing on the area’s allure to color his tales of society and romance. The legacy of the Romantic period is present throughout the town, with mossy stone walls and winding paths that seem plucked from the pages of an ancient story.
