Sainte-Maxime occupies the northern shore of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, directly facing its more famous neighbour across the water. Where Saint-Tropez draws crowds and celebrity, Sainte-Maxime has retained a more measured, residential character: a proper Provençal town with a working port, a sandy seafront promenade, and a year-round population that keeps its streets and markets alive beyond the summer season. The pine-covered hills rising immediately behind the town give many elevated addresses a commanding position over the gulf.

The town centre, a short walk from the waterfront, offers the daily market on Place du Marché, the Casino de Sainte-Maxime, and a concentrated dining strip along the port. Restaurants such as La Maison Bleue and Le Dauphin serve reliable Provençal and seafood menus. The main beach, Plage du Centre, is minutes from the core residential districts.

The nearest commercial airport is Toulon-Hyères, approximately 70 kilometres west, with connections to Paris and several European cities. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport, the primary hub for the region, is roughly 90 kilometres east, around 75 to 90 minutes by road depending on traffic. A passenger ferry service crosses the gulf to Saint-Tropez in approximately 15 minutes, making it easily accessible without navigating the peninsula road.
