Saint-Raphaël sits at the western edge of the Esterel massif on the Var coast, where the deep red porphyry rock of the hills meets the Mediterranean. The town has a distinct dual character: a working Provençal port with a genuine year-round population, and a well-established resort with a history of welcoming writers, artists, and European aristocracy since the Belle Époque. Agay, its most sheltered bay, is considered one of the most naturally protected anchorages on the entire Côte d’Azur.

The covered market on Place Victor Hugo runs daily and is the practical centre of local food shopping. The old port area has a concentration of reliable restaurants, including L’Arbousier for regional cuisine. Agay itself has a small marina, a sandy beach, and direct access to the Esterel hiking trails. Cannes is 35 kilometres west, Saint-Tropez around 60 kilometres east via the coast road.

Saint-Raphaël has a mainline TGV station with direct services to Paris in approximately three hours and connections along the coast to Nice and Marseille. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is roughly 60 kilometres east, accessible in under an hour by car or via a combination of train and shuttle. The A8 motorway provides fast access to Cannes, Monaco, and the Italian border. Marseille Provence Airport is approximately 130 kilometres west.
