Porto Salvo originally consisted of a small settlement at the junction of the roads to Oeiras and Paço de Arcos, extending no further than the site where its church stands today. Its existence is recorded in the Middle Ages (1362), dominated by agricultural, livestock, and extractive activities, and it was then the second most important locality in the municipality of Oeiras.
Its growth is due to the establishment of a hermitage on the hill of Caspolima (1530), dedicated to Our Lady of Porto Salvo. The fervent worship of this figure led to the current name, replacing the historic toponym Caspolima, which fell into disuse from the 18th century onward.
