In the heart of Montpellier, this Montpellier folly from the mid-18th century, designed by a renowned architect of the city, boasts over 550 m² of living space, mostly on one level, set on an intimate garden of approximately 1900 m², completely sheltered from prying eyes. A suburban villa inspired by Italy, the result of thoughtful exchanges between the architect and the client, who closely collaborated to create a ’villa’ in the Italian sense of the term, where discreet and refined elegance is meant to blend seamlessly with the lush garden surroundings. The architecture is decidedly contemporary, featuring rooms that open widely onto the garden. The central pavilion was designed as early as 1757 with an increasing focus on openness to the garden compared to the initial construction. On the west-facing facade, windows and French doors alternate along the entire length. To the north and south, the French doors, all at ground level, open directly from private rooms to the outside, creating an intimate connection with nature. To the east, overlooking the garden, seven French doors punctuate the facade and rise above the vegetation, allowing for a better view. The sculpted decor is elegant: all openings of the house are adorned with sculpted brackets, and the facade is enhanced by its pediment. Inside, rich salons are adorned with an exceptional collection of plasterwork. The private areas perfectly meet the demands of contemporary living with beautiful spaces for bedrooms and bathrooms. Among the annexes, the discreetly located caretaker’s house, the completely ground-level independent pavilion for hosting family and friends, and the orangery complete this magnificent ensemble around a decorative garden: ’a little earthly paradise sheltered from the inconveniences of life.’ For this, all the characteristic elements of the Italian villa have been utilized: a house widely open to a flowering garden with terraces, groves, and fountains, giving a charming and natural Languedocian aspect.
