Mijas occupies an elevated position in the hills above the Costa del Sol, roughly 30 kilometres southwest of Málaga city. The municipality divides between Mijas Pueblo, a well-preserved whitewashed village at around 430 metres altitude with views across the Mediterranean, and the coastal strip of Mijas Costa below. The inland village retains a distinctly Andalusian character, with narrow cobbled streets, a bullring carved into the rock face, and a pace of life that contrasts sharply with the busier resort towns on the coast.
