History & Architectural Character

According to the history shared by the owner, the original house was built for Simon Wardell, a British journalist and friend of the Duke of Windsor, Governor of The Bahamas during World War II. Constructed with the same materials used in Fresh Creek’s original Lighthouse Club, it later belonged to Wardell’s widow, Grace, and subsequently to a founder of Androsia, the Bahamian batik fabric and clothing brand.

In 1997, a later owner, a founder of a medical diagnostic ultrasound company, remodeled and expanded the property into the modern rustic villa seen today. The original wing was incorporated into the larger residence, with architectural design by Robertson Ward Associates, whose international portfolio includes residences in Lyford Cay.

Native Andros pine, reportedly milled on the island, brings warmth to the architecture. A stone hearth and “sugar oven” incorporate blocks attributed in the owner’s account to the Deveaux mansion. In the gardens, the remains of an old Bahamian stone cottage form a distinctive “folly,” surrounded by flowering plants, native trees and fruit trees.

Andros Lifestyle & Access

Days on Andros might begin on the bonefishing flats, continue with offshore fishing or boating, and end overlooking the water at home. Snorkeling and diving reveal the Andros Barrier Reef, while beyond it the Tongue of the Ocean descends into remarkable depths.

Approximately 15 minutes by air from Nassau, Fresh Creek is served by Andros Town Airport, with scheduled flights and private charter options. Arrival by private boat from New Providence offers another way to reach the island, depending on vessel and conditions.
