Vila Tijolo is an exclusive residential development in the heart of Lisbon, near Tapada das Necessidades, between Estrela, Campo de Ourique, and Alcântara. It is an exemplary rehabilitation and expansion project that revives the history of one of the city’s most emblematic workers’ villages and transforms it into a contemporary, elegant, and functional living space.
Built between 1891 and 1893 by José Joaquim de Almeida Junça to house workers from his Fábrica da Fonte Santa (Cerâmicas Junça), Vila do Tijolo is a rare and remarkable example of exposed brick industrial architecture in Lisbon—only comparable to the iconic Campo Pequeno Bullring.
The original project dates back to 1887 and reflects a unique architectural approach, featuring a richly decorative facade, cast iron galleries at the rear, and interiors with high ceilings and exposed brick barrel vaults.
Classified as a Municipal Interest Monument, the property underwent a respectful and meticulous intervention that honors its historical and architectural value while introducing new residential features, comfort, and sustainability.
The generous plot, measuring 2,496.90 m², allowed for the expansion of the original building and the organization of the development into three distinct volumes:
• A. Vila do Tijolo Building (28 residential units) • B. Art Déco Building (2 residential units) • C. Townhouses (5 exclusive houses)
In total, Vila Tijolo includes 35 residential units carefully designed to provide a unique living experience in central Lisbon.
