On the Argolis Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf, the Asclepion cult at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing centre of the classical world. This is one of the birthplaces of civilization, where the ancient theatre of Epidaurus stands (4th century BC). Epidaurus has continued as a landmark of Greek history, from the Byzantine walls of the village to the monuments of modern history that defined the modern Greek state’s struggle for independence.
