1. The castle:
The historic castle of Creixell, built in the 11th century, rises majestically on a prominent hill above the sparkling sea. In recent decades, it served as a private summer residence and is now ready for a new chapter as a unique vacation home, boutique hotel, restaurant, or event venue.
The castle not only offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline but also of the gentle surrounding mountains, completing the idyllic setting. Here, you can enjoy the tranquility and charm of times past.
Access to the castle is via a cobblestone driveway leading directly to the foyer. From there, pathways extend to various parts of the castle, including the chapel, a small prison, the courtyard, and the main staircase that leads to the upper floors. 3. History
Medieval sources suggest that the castle was part of the Monastery of Cluny, a Benedictine monastery, between 1015 and 1022. In the 12th century, the name Creixell appeared for the first time. By 1572, it belonged to the Priory of Sant Pere de Caserres until the last prior died, and King Philip II merged the monastery and priory with the Jesuit College of Barcelona. The Jesuit emblem above the entrance door dates back to this period. In 1767, King Charles III expelled the Jesuits, and the castle became royal property.
The military structure visible today dates to the 16th and 17th centuries when defenses were strengthened against frequent pirate raids.
Historical accounts also mention Queen Isabella of Castile, who is said to have stayed at the castle during one of her royal journeys in the 15th century. The original bed she reportedly slept in remains in one of the bedrooms. This regal visit adds another illustrious chapter to the castle’s rich history, echoing through its walls.
