Maroulas is a village and the seat of the municipality of the same name in the municipality of Rethymnon. It is located to the south-east of Rethymnon, 10km from the town, and is built on a hill at an altitude of 240m. It is a traditional village, classified as a preserved and traditional settlement where the Venetian colour is strongly preserved. According to tradition, the village owes its name to a shepherdess named Maroulis who, while grazing her sheep in the area, found a spring of cool, digestive water. This spring has existed in the village since the Venetian occupation.
Most of the buildings date from the Venetian period, but it is considered likely that the area was inhabited in the Minoan period.
During the Venetian period, two towers were built that are still standing, as well as other buildings with crenellations, while there are various coats of arms on the outer doors of the buildings. You can also see the mill, the large arched doors of the Venetian mansions, the narrow streets and the arches.
