In the 17th century, the masseria and the gravina passed into the hands of the Order of the Poor Clares, whose lasting legacy can still be seen today in the ancient convent. During the 19th century, the estate became the summer residence of Sir James Lacaita, the distinguished Anglo-Italian gentleman, patriot and Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, who transformed it into an elegant cultural salon, welcoming many of the most influential figures of the time. His son, Charles Lacaita, an accomplished botanist, carried out significant studies on the flora of the gravine, contributing to the site’s scientific renown.
The estate is centred around the main masseria, distinguished by its characteristic arcaded portico, and includes a historic chapel, an English-style garden and the former Convent of the Poor Clares, together forming an architectural ensemble of exceptional charm.
