Deià occupies a steep hillside on Mallorca’s northwest coast, within the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which holds UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The village has drawn artists, writers, and musicians since the early twentieth century, and that identity remains intact. Stone houses climb the terraced slopes above olive and citrus groves, the pace is deliberate, and the community is small, international, and fiercely protective of the character that makes Deià unlike anywhere else on the island.
Daily life in Deià centres on a handful of well-regarded institutions. Ca n’Alluny, the home of poet Robert Graves, is a short walk from the village core. Restaurant Jaume and Es Racó d’es Teix hold strong local reputations for dining. The small cove of Cala Deià is a fifteen-minute walk down the valley. Sóller, with its market, shops, and tram connection to Port de Sóller, is approximately ten kilometres by road.
Sóller is reachable in around fifteen minutes by car, offering the historic tram line to the port and a weekly market. Palma, the island capital, is approximately 30 kilometres southeast via the Ma-10 mountain road, typically a 45-minute drive. Palma de Mallorca Airport handles direct connections to most major European cities, with journey times from the airport to Deià running approximately one hour by car.
