Barberry Farm was one such estate, built for Adelaide Burgwin, who founded the Sewickley Hunt Club with her husband John in 1922. Today, Barberry Farm honors agricultural roots with salt-of-the-earth purpose, but it has been updated in distinctly modern ways. Many of its century-old structures hold steadfast, adding character and function a working farm, but its latest chapter began in 1998 when it opened as a boarding facility and riding community. A scenic trail encircles eight parcels and leads directly to neighboring Sewickley Heights Borough Park - over 1,000 acres of undeveloped forest and fields where horses are still the fabric of local culture. As ever, The Hunt rides twice per week, one of the oldest remaining clubs of its kind. To witness it feels like traveling back in time, lent in part by intentional tradition and pristine beauty that have been safeguarded since its inception.
