It’s late afternoon in early June. The pool has been in the sun since lunch, the barbecue is lit behind its wall of ivy, and from the upstairs balcony a strip of blue Atlantic shows over the rooftops of Porto de Mós. Your friends are staying in the guest apartment at the other end of the house, with their own front door, so everyone gets the evening they want.

This four-bedroom villa sits on a 510 m² plot in Porto de Mós, one of the calmest residential neighbourhoods in Lagos, about a kilometre from the beach. It has been fully refurbished, electrics and plumbing included, and it comes with something few villas in the area offer: a self-contained two-bedroom apartment of its own.

The ground floor is built around a run of white arches. The living room, with its fireplace and heat-recovery system, opens through them to the dining room and on to the kitchen, so light from both sides of the house travels right through. The former garage has been converted into a separate two-bedroom apartment with its own entrance, an open-plan living room, a white kitchen with a breakfast island, and its own shower room. It works for visiting family, for a live-in helper, for a home office with real separation, or, with the appropriate licence, for holiday letting.

Porto de Mós beach is about a kilometre away, roughly fifteen minutes on foot, with its seafood restaurants and the cliff path towards Ponta da Piedade. Lagos old town and the marina are about five minutes by car, so the weekly market, the cafés and the school run are all close. Meia Praia is ten minutes away for long walks on the sand, and Faro airport is about an hour along the A22.
