Sainte-Maxime occupies a privileged position on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, directly across the water from Saint-Tropez itself. Unlike its more celebrated neighbour, Sainte-Maxime has retained a genuinely residential character, attracting a discreet, largely French clientele alongside international buyers who value privacy over spectacle. The town combines a working port with a well-maintained seafront promenade, a compact historic centre, and a backdrop of the Maures massif that keeps the landscape green and the summers cooler than the coast further east.

The town centre offers daily markets at the Place du Marché, reliable dining along the Rue Fernand Bessy, and direct ferry access to Saint-Tropez in under twenty minutes. The Golf de Sainte-Maxime provides an 18-hole course within the commune. Fréjus and its broader retail and medical infrastructure are approximately 20 kilometres west.

The A8 motorway connects the area to Cannes, Nice, and Monaco to the east, and to Aix-en-Provence and beyond to the west.
