El Palácio Mesquita Pimentel fue construido en el siglo XVI por Luís de Mesquita Pimentel, noble caballero de la ciudad de Elvas. El Palácio albergó al Rey Felipe II de España en 1580 mientras vivía en Elvas antes de partir hacia Lisboa. Varios meses antes, el Palácio fue objeto de grandes obras realizadas por el arquitecto real Juan de Herrera, quien construyó el Monasterio del Escorial.
