The unique “Eco Houses” by Prof. Frei Otto were designed as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) 1984–1987 and built by nine different architects. Prof. Frei Otto is regarded as one of the most important representatives of “Organic Architecture,” which seeks harmony between living space and nature. Plants and trees were integrated into the overall project. The split-level residential buildings are in one of the best locations in Tiergarten, between Kurfürstendamm and Potsdamer Platz, on the site of the former Vatican Embassy. The embassy quarter adjoins it. Shops for daily needs as well as cafés, including Café am Neuen See, and various restaurants are in the immediate vicinity. Berlin sights such as the Victory Column, Potsdamer Platz, the Zoo with Aquarium, and the famous KaDeWe on Kurfürstendamm are also nearby.
