THE ROADSTER THAT REMADE PORSCHE
By now, the story is well rehearsed: Porsche entered the 1990s in real financial peril, and the car charged with the rescue was not a 911 at all but a mid-engined roadster. Unveiled in concept form at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show, Grant Larson’s design drew openly on the 550 Spyder — a racing Porsche with its engine behind the driver — and the production 986

By now, the story is well rehearsed: Porsche entered the 1990s in real financial peril, and the car charged with the rescue was not a 911 at all but a mid-engined roadster. Unveiled in concept form at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show, Grant Larson’s design drew openly on the 550 Spyder — a racing Porsche with its engine behind the driver — and the production 986 Boxster of 1996 became the marque’s first clean-sheet road car in a generation. The recipe held nothing cynical. A water-cooled flat-six sat amidships, the weight sat nearly ideally between the axles, and the period press judged its balance among the finest of any sports car then on sale. For 2003 the Boxster received its most meaningful revision: output of the 2.7-litre engine rose to 225 bhp, the top gained a heated glass rear window, and subtly reworked intakes and bumpers freshened Larson’s original form. These late cars are widely regarded as the most resolved of the generation.
TWO CARETAKERS, TWENTY-THREE YEARS
The example presented here, chassis WP0CA29843U623150, completed production in December 2002 at Valmet Automotive of Uusikaupunki, Finland — Porsche’s longstanding contract assembly partner for the Boxster — and was delivered new in May 2003 through McKenna Motors of Norwalk, California. Its $54,045 original specification reads quietly well: Black over Natural Leather Brown beneath a black top, with 18-inch Carrera wheels wearing colored-crest caps, the Xenon headlamp package, Bose digital sound with windstop, and cruise control.
First titled in Redondo Beach in November 2003, the Boxster found lasting ownership with its original caretaker, who retained it for approximately two decades and drove it sparingly — roughly 970 miles per year — with servicing principally at McKenna’s Porsche operation and, later, Porsche South Bay. The accompanying Carfax report records 23 service entries, six passed California emissions inspections, and no accidents or damage of any kind. In March 2024 the car passed to its second owner and came east to Massachusetts, where servicing continued at Porsche Westwood. The IMS bearing, rear main seal, clutch, and water pump have all been replaced. The odometer presently displays 24,320 miles.
Offered with its books, keys, and service file, this is a late-production Boxster with the mechanical anxieties already answered and the mileage of a far younger car — a benchmark example of the roadster that carried Porsche into its modern era.

AVI Gallery is the sales and advisory division of AVI, which has cared for the finest motorcars across New England
AVI Gallery is the sales and advisory division of AVI, which has cared for the finest motorcars across New England since 2004. After 22 years of servicing special cars, we added what our clients kept asking for: sales, consignment, sourcing, valuation, and collection advisory.
Every car we offer is evaluated with AVI’s technical experience behind it and presented with our analysis alongside the car’s documentation for open-book review. We value our cars against completed transactions rather than asking prices, and we are glad to show the reasoning behind any figure we ask.
Beyond the cars listed here, we source examples to a buyer’s specification through long-standing relationships, accept limited consignments, and advise on valuation and collection planning.
We work candidly, in confidence, and always with discretion.
