The MG TD was introduced in 1950 as the successor to the popular MG TC, combining the classic styling of MG’s earlier sports cars with improvements designed to make it more comfortable and practical for everyday driving. Built on a strengthened version of the MG Y-type chassis, the TD featured independent front suspension, rack-and-pinion steering, and smaller 15-inch wheels while retaining the distinctive upright grille, sweeping fenders, and open two-seat roadster styling that had become synonymous with MG. Power came from MG’s proven 1,250 CC XPAG inline 4-cylinder engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The TD proved to be especially popular in the United States and helped introduce a new generation of American enthusiasts to the appeal of lightweight British sports cars.
