Max Hoffman was more than just a car importer & businessman – with his extensive knowledge of the US market, he inspired European manufacturers and contributed significantly to the success of Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Alfa-Romeo, and BMW in the USA. He inspired & moved the manufacturers to build iconic models e.g. BMW 507, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, and Porsche 356 Speedster. In 1948, the Hoffman Motor Company became a dealer for Jaguar on the US West Coast, and he also held the brands Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Austin, Rover, Cooper, Healey, Morgan and Lea-Francis in his portfolio. In 1952, Hoffman entered into a collaboration with Mercedes-Benz – at the expense of his Jaguar agency. He chose Park Avenue in New York as the location for his showroom; the building was designed by star architect Frank Lloyd Wright, as was Hoffman’s home in Rye (NY). As an esthete with a sense of colors and shapes, Max Hoffman knew how to create trends.

THE ONE-OF-ONE JAGUAR XK120 PININFARINA

What do you get if you combine British sports car engineering, Italian design & an automotive mastermind?

This is the only Jaguar XK120 with a Pininfarina body ever created. The car with Chassis number ‚S675360 was ordered by Max Hoffman the highly influential New York importer for Jaguars. It was manufactured on 5th April 1954 and dispatched to Max Hoffmann on 25th May 1954. Upon completion, the car was shown at Turin Motor Show in May 1955 & Geneva Motor Show in 1955/56. The Autocar magazine described it as an „XK120… by Pinin Farina… for an American enthusiast“. It is quite likely this enthusiast was Max Hoffman himself.

In 1978 German collector Ludwig Draxel-Fischer purchased the car for restoration purposes but never completed the project.

In 2015 Classic Motor Cars a well-known marque specialist in the UK restored the car to its former glory. It was 6,275 hours for a nut-and-bolt restoration invested to bring the car to a ‚100-point‘ Concours condition. The effort paid off with a 2nd place award at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours (class 0-2 Postwar Closed). Additionally, the car received the International Historic Restoration of the Year Award in 2017 as a result of its stunning return to 1955 Geneva Motor Show condition.

With the car is the Jaguar Heritage Trust certificate & its FIVA Pass present. An extensive file on historic documents, invoices & correspondence in between former owners is present.

Max Hoffman war mehr als nur ein Autoimporteur und Geschäftsmann – mit seiner umfassenden Kenntnis des US-Marktes inspirierte er europäische Hersteller und trug maßgeblich zum Erfolg von Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Alfa-Romeo und BMW in den USA bei. Er inspirierte und bewegte die Hersteller dazu, ikonische Modelle zu bauen, wie z.B. BMW 507, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL und Porsche 356 Speedster. 1948 wurde die Hoffman Motor Company Händler für Jaguar an der Westküste der USA und er hatte auch die Marken Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Austin, Rover, Cooper, Healey, Morgan und Lea-Francis in seinem Portfolio. 1952 ging Hoffman eine Zusammenarbeit mit Mercedes-Benz – auf Kosten seiner Jaguar-Vertretung ein. Als Standort für seinen Showroom wählte er die Park Avenue in New York; Das Gebäude wurde vom Stararchitekten Frank Lloyd Wright entworfen, ebenso wie Hoffmans Wohnhaus in Rye (NY). Als Ästhet mit Gespür für Farben und Formen wusste Max Hoffman, wie man Trends kreiert.

DER 1 VON 1 – JAGUAR XK120 PININFARINA

Das Resultat von britische Sportwagentechnik, italienisches Design und ein automotives Genie!

Dies ist der einzige Jaguar XK120 mit einer Pininfarina-Karosserie, die jemals hergestellt wurde. Das Auto mit der Fahrgestellnummer „S675360“ wurde von Max Hoffman, dem einflussreichen New Yorker Importeur für Jaguars, bestellt. Es wurde am 5. April 1954 hergestellt und am 25. Mai 1954 an Max Hoffmann ausgeliefert. Nach seiner Fertigstellung wurde das Auto im Mai 1955 auf dem Turiner Autosalon und 1955/56 auf dem Genfer Autosalon gezeigt. Das Autocar-Magazin beschrieb es als „XK120 … von Pinin Farina … für einen amerikanischen Enthusiasten“. Es ist sehr wahrscheinlich, dass dieser Enthusiast Max Hoffman selbst war.

1978 kaufte der deutsche Sammler Ludwig Draxel-Fischer das Auto zu Restaurierungszwecken, schloss das Projekt jedoch nie ab.

Im Jahr 2015 restaurierte Classic Motor Cars, ein bekannter Markenspezialist in Großbritannien, das Auto in seinem früheren Glanz. Es wurden 6.275 Stunden für eine umfassende Restaurierung aufgewendet, um das Auto in einen „100-Punkte“-Concours-Zustand zu bringen. Der Einsatz zahlte sich mit einem zweiten Platz beim Pebble Beach Concours 2017 (Klasse 0-2 Postwar Closed) aus. Darüber hinaus wurde das Auto 2017 mit dem International Historic Restoration of the Year Award ausgezeichnet, weil es wieder in den Zustand des Genfer Autosalons von 1955 zurückversetzt wurde.

Mit dem Auto sind das Jaguar Heritage Trust-Zertifikat und sein FIVA-Pass vorhanden. Eine umfangreiche Akte über historische Dokumente, Rechnungen und Korrespondenz zwischen früheren Eigentümern ist ebenfalls vorhanden.
