1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS Coupe

”Hands down, the Z28 SS was judged the most racecar-like, right down to its well bolstered bucket seat. It consistently topped out at or above 120 mph in fifth gear. The Camaro wins this test, and it wins it going away. It was the quickest, the fastest, and the best handler in every one of our measured performance tests. It’s a terrific race car right out of the Cosmoline, needing only a roll cage to complete the terrorist transformation begun by SLP.” From Car and Driver’s test, December 1995, of a ’96 SS, Mustang Cobra, and Firebird Formula WS6.

For consignment, a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28/SS with a title verified 66,420 actual miles. Somewhere around 2,300 were built in 1996 and not many of them were green. Production was so limited that the cars were numbered; this is #834 and was part of the Camaro 35th Anniversary unveiling that took place in June 2001 in Carlisle. It also happens to be a one owner car that’s always been garaged.

Exterior
It’s very possible that less than fifty Z28/SS were Polo Green Metallic but that information is not readily available. Even so, when was the last time you saw one! In classic F-body profile, the wedge and its pointed nose that cuts through the air, directing some of it to the distinctive and aggressive scoop on the hood. The forward leaning C-pillar meets a body colored solid roof while an integrated rear wing is almost invisible until you get behind the car where the air gap becomes obvious. It’s also there where the SS emblem and dual exhaust tips clue you in to what you’re following and when you go to pass, you’ll notice the 17-inch wheels specific to the SS, wrapped in 40 series tires. This car’s been well cared for and we could not find any glaring exterior imperfections. The paint and body are in excellent condition with very few flaws. Those we note include a few chips on the hood, tire sidewall rash and gash, nose chips and chin scrapes, and a touch of extra paint or debris at the rocker.

Interior
Ebony plastic door panels are softened by pleated leather inserts and carpeted lower sections and both doors present cleanly and provide some storage at the base. Graphite leather bucket seats have held up well while in back, deep 2+2 seats will keep the little ones planted. Horn buttons flank the airbag on the leather wrapped steering wheel with ergonomic bumps at 3 and 9 o’clock and if you remember driver’s ed, that’s where your hands should be. Up front, a straightforward instrument cluster with red needles against black faces and bright white digits, relaying all the information you’ll need. The A/C panel in the center could not be more elementary and the integrated AM/FM/Cassette radio is ready to accept your No Doubt tape. The shifter fronts the SS number plate and requisite cupholder, while clean low pile carpet is protected by SS mats. Headliner sags have been arrested with the use of some plastic buttons and the cargo area is carpeted finished with charcoal panels.

Drivetrain
Tucked deep into the engine bay is the clean and legendary 5.7 liter LT1 V8 that pumps out 305 horsepower. It’s mated to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt axle with 3.23 gears and Positraction. The bay is clean and presents in its original configuration. Our consignor notes the water pump has been replaced and the Opti spark rebuilt.

Undercarriage
Clean underneath as the single exhaust flows through an SLP muffler and releases to the atmosphere through twin polished tips on the driver’s side. Power disc brakes are on all four wheels and suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a torque arm helping out in back.

Drive-Ability
This pampered car does not disappoint on the test loop where it provides gobs of power, great handling, and a clean, comfortable interior. Tires here are 15 years old so there will be no burnouts today. But it certainly seems capable and look Ma, no shifting needed! All functions on this mean green machine operate as intended and we’re ready to put this one on the showroom floor. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The limited run of the 1996 Z28/SS cars means they’re already collectible and the clean presentation of this example means you’ll have a show car that you can drive and enjoy without breaking the bank! This car can serve as your fountain of youth or your first foray into the American sports car world. With that gaping hood scoop, it’s a heckuva way to make an entrance!
