Hot Rodder’s traditionally are always pushing boundaries. In the early days of this movement, enthusiasts took Model A bodies and modified the chassis and powerplants to modern components sourced from wrecking yards to update their rides and push their vehicles to new performance levels. The truck featured here is a continuation of the talented and clever fabrication that is what custom street rodding is all about. This build is based on a 1964 Chevrolet Fleetside Short Bed Pick-up that appears to be a barely streetable old-school hot rod truck...but is it?

The body of this vintage pick-up was modified to fit over the chassis of a 2009 Chevrolet Impala and painted a matte red finish with a cameo white roof. Custom airbrushed stripes replicate the factory body side molding, and the doors are accented with a vintage ”Old Ernie’s Speed Shop” logo. Consider that the wheelbase on a 1964 Truck and 2009 Impala are similar, but different requiring the wheel openings to be modified to accommodate the 5” difference in the wheelbase of the Impala, and the chassis is also front wheel drive. The bodywork was expertly executed and looks factory original. The stock hood has been modified to look as though there is a tunnel ram intake sticking through it and the illusion is very convincing until you actually lift the hood. Outback the truck bed has been extensively modified with tubed wheel wells and a custom diamond-plated floor and a faux NOS bottle that further deepens the illusion of a serious race truck. The fuel inlet is built into the rear inner wheel well to allow fueling into the Impala fuel cell.

Upon opening the hood, the truth is revealed as a transversely mounted 3.9L V6 sits. Keep in mind this modern powerplant is no slouch factory rated at 242hp at 6000rpm and 242 ft-lbs. of torque at 4800rpm. The engine compartment is clean with the engine cover decorated in the skull and biker motif that is found throughout this truck. Unlike many custom builds, the parts are widely available, and the service is simple as it is a stock 2006 Chevrolet Impala. Imagine the surprise if you stopped in at the local Chevy dealer for some maintenance! Power is transferred to the front wheels, yes the front wheels, via a GM 4-speed automatic transmission. This truck also benefits from power steering, and power four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. The donor chassis and drivetrain have approximately 75K on them and the floors and unibody are solid without any rust or corrosion issues.

Inside the cabin Impala dash and front seats were utilized. The power bucket seats are covered in leather upholstery split by a floor-mounted shifter and console. The dash is accented with the same skeleton/ biker gal decoration found under the hood and the headliner features an impressive ”Ghost Rider-themed” mural. Modern options include A/C, tilt steering column, cruise control and the sound system has been upgraded to a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo with Bluetooth and AUX input. Of course, this is all hidden behind tinted glass.

This custom truck looks aggressive and barely streetable, however, in reality, it features all the modern comforts to make this a great daily driver or perfect for long drives to car shows. Please call if interested or e-mail with specific questions. Thanks for looking.
