”The panel trucks from 1957 to 1960, most popular back then were the Chevrolet/GMC and Ford varieties, with Dodge, International and Studebaker also notable. These panel and smaller delivery trucks were very popular because back then the smaller vans that would eventually replace the car like delivery panels were just starting to arrive on the scene. These 1950 to 1960 low on amenity, farm truck style pickups and panel wagons are now commanding well over $30,000 and up in great condition.” Excerpted from [hidden information], ”Panel Trucks Bring Back Memories.”

For consignment, a 1958 Chevrolet Apache 3100 Series panel delivered with a title verified 140,039 actual miles. This unfinished project comes with enough parts to get it close to finished and has been owned by our consignor since 1988. With a little TLC and the paint color of your choice, this has great potential. It runs and moves with a rebuilt engine that comes with receipts.

Exterior
There’s no sugar coating it, this truck presents with primer and patches of filler and the trim, grill, lights, and bumpers are off. There are some spots of bare metal as well, and the final smoothing is far from over. There’s also rust in the door jamb and threshold that will need to be addressed. 15-inch steel wheels are on board and can be painted when the time comes, or replaced with modern units; the sky’s the limit!

Interior
Newly upholstered frames come with the van, but currently the interior is filled with all the parts and some boxes up front to serve as seats. The steering wheel’s in good shape and it’s not hard to imagine the dashboard finished but currently shows almost ready for paint. There’s a rubberized covering on the floor and a headliner pad above, but the walls are otherwise barren metal.

Drivetrain
The cleanest part of the 3100 is under the hood where we find a 235.5 inline six cylinder with a 1-barrel carburetor and a 3-speed manual behind it. Power is routed to 3.90 gears in the rear axle. Other than painted inner fenders, this bay is just about ready!

Undercarriage
The underside shows lots of patina, some rust, and a clean single exhaust that travels through a stock style muffler. Leaf springs are utilized front and rear and so are drum brakes.

Drive-Ability
There are no lights, wipers, or a heater but the van does run and move. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Just about everything you’ll need, including a new radio, comes with this project Apache. Deliveries are show stoppers at any car gathering and also make great tools for business promotion. Some have even gone so far as to street rod these working trucks that were once the backbone of the working man! The options are endless for this Chevrolet!
