Description

The 7016/0 Submariner seen here is a pre-Production Prototype which were in most cases 'Test Marketed' very few of them exist, they can be found with the case back Reference #7528 - the date stamps on them are mostly I.68 or the first quarter of 1968. Tudor introduced a new caliber which was a unique caliber only made by Tudor, and specifically made for the Submariner series. Previous versions of the Tudor Submariner had the FEF 390/ and also during this year, the Snowflake was born. 1968- the Snowflake was not released till the IV.68 or the fourth quarter, historically this is the first newer version of the dive days. The Submariner here, had a larger than normal Mercedes Hour hand and also a very prominent large bubble 'Lollipop seconds hand' which can be seen here - it is quite engaging, and very cool. One of the benchmarks I have always had, was the state of the inner works, the insides. A serviced watch, with the period perfect lubrication will always behave in the best way possible when worn on the wrist. This caliber 2483 is a really lovely caliber with modified parts as well as superb escapement, to suit it's rigorous use, as a tool watch it performs mightily, a spec of +/- 10 seconds per day is imminent. The pictures will very clearly show you a near mint movement, in flawless condition. The case is very battered, and has been used as a tool watch, but we have a fully working condition time piece- with no visible parts re-touched as in the dial, hands, and case and insert- all belong to the case. A tall 5 insert is on this watch, this is another good plus for it, period specific to the 1968 era, the insert has seen better days and has many scratch marks visible. The lume dot on it was replaced at some point, so that color does not match up to the rest of the watch. Please note that in those days the dial had most probably a small amount of live radium, which has mostly dropped off, and it is a guaranteed authentic Tudor dial with a radial longer markers for minutes and very large lume plots. Made by BEYELER. The Tudor Book by Alberto Isnardi very clearly lists this item as a pre-Production Prototype model in one of it's pages with a lot of attention to detail on the pages devoted to the dial, the small rose Tudor logo, for it was during this year too that the dial logo for Tudor also was changed over to the Tudor SHIELD logo which is still being used today. 1968 then marked a historic change, for the Tudor small rose logo. Extremely few of these pieces exist, many forgotten, and many in poor state. I still think that this is a more than alright watch to use, and to have it in this condition is a bonus, indeed.
