This is the vintage Rolex Submariner "Red Triangle" timepiece from 1958, reference number 5508.
The watch is an early version of a Rolex “Small Crown” Submariner that was popularized by its use in James Bond films. This model is offered in good condition, and boasts a 38 mm stainless steel case that has been previously polished. The case is fitted with a bezel that retains its original, rare, and very valuable “red triangle” bezel insert, which was used on these Submariners until 1959, and were more often than not replaced and discarded over the years. The watch is water-resistant to 100 meters and worn on a stainless steel Rolex bracelet dated to 1960.
This model features a radium dial, that was used before Rolex transitioned away from radium and applied the luminous material with tritium. The dial is still glossy, with no major damage or scratches, and shows very fine cracking to the lacquer (“spidering”), which is very common in these early gilt-dial watches. Further, the original radium lume is present on both the dial and the hands, aged to an attractive yellow color. The dial features central hours, minutes and seconds. The watch is equipped with the 1530 self-winding movement that builds up power reserve of 44 hours.
This timepiece is offered in a pre-owned condition and includes a gift box.
