The RM 47 is a luxury timepiece that took almost 4 years to develop. Inspired by the 47 Ronin, who sought to avenge their master’s death in ancient Japanese history, the watch embodies Richard Mille’s conversation with Formula One driver Fernando Alonso, who is passionate about Japanese art and the Bushido Code. The RM 47 reflects this inspiration in various aspects of its design.

The RM watch has a tonneau-shaped case that combines black TZP ceramic and 3N yellow gold and measures 42.7 mm x 50.00 mm and 16.25 in thickness. The dial is almost completely made up of the Samurai warrior, crafted entirely by hand and taking 16 hours to engrave and 9 hours to paint. Inspired by gold leaf which is commonly used in Japanese crafts the samurai’s armour was represented in 3N yellow gold. The Asano clan’s crest is portrayed by the crisscrossed falcon feathers that take pride and place on the tourbillon and are further represented on the wings of the helmet. The two warrior swords with upturned blades are highly detailed and further enhance the dial, along with the myriad of other highly detailed aspects of this sculpture. The tripartite case is water resistant to 50 meters, ensured by the application of 2 Nitrile O-ring seals, and assembled with 20 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion-resistant washers in 316L stainless steel.

The power behind the RM 47 is the newly developed calibre RM47, an extremely compact, manual winding tourbillon movement that offers hours and minutes and a power reserve of up to 72 hours. The baseplate and skeletonised bridges are crafted in grade 5 titanium and coated with a black PVD coating, making them highly resistant to corrosion, yet rigid and flat which allows the gear train to operate seamlessly.
