Launched in 1976, the Nautilus was Patek Philippe's first truly water resistant luxury sports watch designed by Grald Genta. Inspired by the portholes of transatlantic ocean liners, it was named after Captain Nemos Nautilus submarine from Jules Vernes Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Patek Philippe produced two versions of the Nautilus reference 3700 in stainless steel; 3700/1 from 1976 to about 1981, and the 3700/11, which was in production from 1981 to 1990. The 3700 is known as the Jumbo by collectors.
