The year 2016 marks the 40th anniversary of the famed Patek Philippe Nautilus, a favorite among collectors new and old. At Baselworld 2016 Patek indicated there would be some special pieces coming, one of them an oversized white gold Nautilus chronograph with diamond indexes.
At first glance, you might think this watch is a special version of the ref. 5980, and for good reason: the watches have the same dial layout and are both powered by the caliber CH 28-520 C. This is an automatic flyback chronograph movement with both a column wheel and a vertical clutch, plus the date.
But, this is a very different watch. The solid white gold case measures 44mm across the dial aperture and a whopping 49.25mm if you include the oblong sides of the case. It's 12.16mm thick, which seems appropriate for a watch of this size incidentally, the much smaller 5980 is the same thickness, meaning this watch will likely feel thinner because of the additional diameter. The bracelet is also solid white gold, so you know this is going to be a seriously hefty watch.
