Description

JAEGER-LECOULTRE, MEMOVOX, « LAPIS LAZULI » SCALE DIAL ICONEEK is proud to introduce here, with no doubts our favorite alarm wristwatch, probably the sexiest alarm watch ever produced, as well as one of the most beautiful and rarest version of the famous Memovox, the so-called « Lapis Lazuli ». When JLC launched in 2016, the highly attractive Master Memovox Boutique Edition, blue, limited edition to 500 pcs, it was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Memovox Automatic, but also probably to pay tribute to one of their best ever creation, a cult watch, with fantastic design, the original vintage « Jumbo Memovox Lapis Lazuli », aka E855 « Blue Scale dial ». Presented in 1950 at the Basel Fair, under ref. 3150 with tubular lugs, patented in January 1952 under patent no. CH280561, see picture below, the Memovox, for « The Voice of Memory », is still actually one of the icons of the brand and one of their best seller, as well as one of their most sought after models. Six years later, in 1956, the model become automatic with cal. 815, no date, and cal. 825 with date indication. The model was still available in hand-wound versions, such as the Memovox parking, ref. 3161 or the Memovox World Time, ref. 3160, both born in 1958. From 1970 till the mid 70’s, the Memovox Automatic were fitted with a new hi-beat (28’800 alt/h) and rotor (instead of bumpers) caliber 916, these models were also called « Speed Beat ». In the very late Sixties, circa 1968, JLC released two Ref. E855 with a so-called « scale dial »: a blue lacquered one with stainless case, such as the present watch, and a brown version, with a red inner alarm ring, which normally came with a 14 carat gold case or exceptionally with an 18K gold case, see here. The particularities of these models were their special dials: a lapis lazuli color for the blue one, a mahogany / brownie color for the brown one. But not only, they were both featuring an unusual inner alarm ring: light blue for the blue example, a red for the brown one. If the total production number remains unknown, according to scholars, all E855 with scale dials were produced maybe one year or two only. Actually, around five steel with blue scale dial appeared on the market. Made in 1968, the present « Lapis Lazuli » blue « Scale dial » is an extremely fine, water-resistant, stainless steel, automatic wristwatch with sweep center seconds, date and alarm. The model is also called the « Lapis Lazuli » because of its blue lacquered dial that resembles lapis lazuli stone. The model has a three-body construction: a circular stainless steel case, with two crowns in the band, a water-resistant compressor-type screwed ring on a plain snap on steel case back, an hesalite glass. The size between the lugs is 18 mm. Under the hesalite glass, a blue lacquered dial, applied baton numerals, inner light blue ring for alarm with luminous accents. According to scholars, around 5 to 7 watches only appeared back on the market, making the present watch one of the rarest Memovox to date. According to our researches, less than ten examples went back on the vintage market. These Jumbo Memovox models have strong contemporary followings due to their relatively large and thick size, as well as the fact that they have an automatic movement. The present example is by far one of the best one that appeared on the market, with its mint dial, original hands, unrestored unpolished case, original JLC signed steel crown. so, who cannot feel in love with this stunning and extremely rare vintage JLC ? Accompanied by a Jaeger-LeCoultre Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1969. Case, dial and movement are signed. An other « Lapis lazuli » is permanently exhibited at the JLC patrimony gallery in Le Sentier. A unique opportunity !!! A JLC vintage Grail watch !! A collector’s dream ! Condition: 9.5/10, original and pristine condition, mint dial, in working condition, overhaul recommended Accessories: later JLC presentation box, Extract from the Archives ** ** FOR ANY REQUEST, PLEASE CONTACT US DIRECTLY (Contact in Bio) ** ** ICONEEK is « A safe place to buy, a safe place to sell » ICONEEK is a private showroom, located in the heart of Geneva, managed by international watch experts.
