The village of Calhandriz sits cradled in a landscape beautifully formed by erosion, creating a natural amphitheatre of great beauty. It is much older than the foundation of Portugal. The layout of the parish, clinging to the side of the hills, and therefore not always harmonious, is unique in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira.

The houses extend downhill, in a gentle fall that pleases its 900 or so inhabitants, beneficiaries of the fantastic advantages of a quiet rural environment.

The few archaeological remains found in the Ribeira de Calhandriz, along a dirt track leading to Alverca, allow us to conclude that the human presence on the site dates to prehistoric times. Little is known about the passage of the Romans and there is no other testimony in stone other than the carved stone at the entrance to São Marcos Church, which is said to have belonged to a manor house.

Because of the French invasions at the beginning of the 19th century, Calhandriz had five important military forts, which were part of the famous Defensive Lines of Torres Vedras. The remains of these fortifications, built on the hills and between hills and valleys, are still visible and can be visited today. This is the case, in particular, of the Novo da Costa da Freira redoubt and the Serra do Formoso redoubt (the latter located in a border area between S. João dos Montes and Calhandriz), which are in good condition.

Calhandriz is famous for the excellent cherries it produces. It is a land of good wine and good food, attributes that turn the disadvantages of living in the interior into an advantage, both for those who live there and those who visit. There used to be famous farms, which the old people still remember, like the huge Quinta Alegre and Quinta da Calçada.

The black Calhandriz cherry is the raw material for an delicious liqueur that is still made there today, using an old convent recipe. It is just thirteen kilometres from Vila Franca de Xira and thirty kilometres from Lisbon, which makes it an appealing destination, an invitation to discover gastronomy, nature and outdoor activities.

It also offers heritage such as the São Marcos Mother Church and the Fortresses of the Lines of Torres.

Thanks to its location, Calhandriz offers easy access to the capital, particularly along the A1 motorway.
