Description

This small convent was built in 1612 by Capuchin monks. It is ideally situated only 500 meters from the historic center of Tavira, the most ancient, quaint and preserved city of the Algarve. In 1840, the convent became a hallmark of a rural family home. Finally, in 1994, the owners painstakingly restored the convent preserving the simplicity, stillness and harmony of the structure and its unique history. Convento de Santo Antonio opened as a touristic hotel. Surrounded by tropical vegetation and whitewashed walls, with views over the Natural Park of Ria Formosa, the Convent recollects the seventeenth-century cloister luminosity that identified this magical place. With a square configuration in the center of which is the cloisters, the two-story building consists of three wings to the east, south and west. The north wall is attached to the existing church. Access between floors is via two outside stairways, one to the east and another to the west. In this way, the ground and first floors can function independently. The divisions are distributed as follows: 1st floor: hall 2 corridors, lounge with various environments (110m2) and 2 fireplaces, 4 bedrooms with private bathrooms, a common bathroom, chapel, kitchen, pantry, hall and terrace surrounding (gallery of the cloister). Ground floor: 3 suites with independent access from the outside and interior common courtyard, as follows: - East Suite - living room, small hall, bedroom, bathroom, small kitchen and storage; - South Suite - hall, bedroom with bathroom, living room with mezzanine, guest toilet and kitchen; - West Suite - hall, 2 bedrooms with bathroom, living room and small kitchenette. The monastery is surrounded by green spaces that include a backyard and garden in separate zones. An old well, originally used for irrigation has been converted into a swimming pool. There is also an outdoor bar, and annex for the staff.
