Just the other side of busy awaits an idyllic retreat offering all the best of Maine living. Conveniently close to Route One, down a short paved road through a friendly neighborhood, Flanders Keep is only 20 minutes from the amenities of Ellsworth, but miles from the traffic and hustle and bustle. Privacy and serenity are a constant at Flanders Keep, yet shopping, fine dining, movies, drama and musical entertainment, golf courses, and Acadia National Park sites are all just a short drive away in either direction, east or west.
Imagine waking to the smell of salt air wafting through your open bedroom windows. You watch from your bed, in any of the 5 water facing bedrooms, 4 of which are master suites, lobstermen hauling their traps, with the seagulls encircling their boats, and the waves splashing gently on your shore. The sunrise is illuminating Sorrento's Treasure Island and Cadillac Mountain on Mount Desert Island. The first decision of the day is where to have breakfast. The east facing breakfast nook, the southerly facing patio, the upstairs family room where osprey and eagles fly right by the full-length windows, the shaded entry patio, the dining room, the commodious kitchen, the downstairs living room, or the large picnic area at the water's edge? Regardless of which space you choose, the ever changing sights and sounds of Flanders Bay await you.
Planning for a stay at home day? Kayaking, rowing, swimming, sailing, choosing an enticing book from the second floor library, viewing movies in the media room, searching for sea glass along the shoreline, horseshoes or croquet on the back lawn, working in your conveniently located kitchen garden, enjoying your numerous perennial gardens, working on a woodworking project in the large, heated shop; all these options are more than enough to fill your day without leaving home. End your day with a lobster bake at the shore, culminating with the most incredibly beautiful sunsets over the waters of Flanders Bay. Just another day in paradise!
The scale of Flanders Keep may be large, but the energy efficiency is incredible. Designed and built by a master craftsman, the house is a model in energy efficiency. From the south-facing placement on the lot, to the high R-Value Icynene insulation, to the triple glazed windows, to the radiant heat, Flanders Keep stays cool in summer and warm in winter, with utility bills being equal to a house less than half it's size. On a sunny winter's day in February in Maine, the high efficiency boiler doesn't even come on, as the solar gain from the south facing floor to ceiling windows is enough to keep the temperature cozy. Each room, including the two garages and the shop, have their own thermostat as well. When the house is full of family, or when some rooms aren't being used, the choice is yours as to the temperature of each space.
The coast of Maine has always been a highly desirable place to call home. Temperate in both summer and winter and always beautiful regardless of the season, Flanders Keep offers the absolute best of coastal living and creates a lifetime of incredible experiences and memories.
