Oliveira de Azeméis:
Is a Portuguese city located in the district of Aveiro and it is part of the Large Metropolitan area of Porto.
The city can be reached easily by a vast and modern network of roads and transportation
Aveiro:
Roaming through Aveiro is the same as diving in the waters of Center de Portugal. Known as the “Portuguese Venice”, the city is quietly dominated by the Ria de Aveiro, described by Saramago as “a living body that connects the land to the sea like a huge heart.”
Get on board in a moliceiro (the typical boat of Aveiro that makes the transportation of salt) and go along the canals of the lagoon which, just like water roads, lead you through the city. See the Art Nouveau houses which decorate the banks or discover their every detail by taking a guided walking tour organized by the City Museum. If you want to, you can also venture alone on a bike ride with BUGA, a public service in which you can use bikes borrowed by the municipality for free
You can also save some time visiting the Vista Alegre Factory, where the most international Portuguese porcelain is made.
It’s also possible to go down to Costa Nova and be charmed by this colorful piece of the Portuguese coast. This beach is different because of the wooden houses painted with stripes of white and bright colors which used to be haystacks and shelters for fishermen. Right next to it, at Barra beach, you will find the dominant and imposing Barra Light, the tallest lighthouse in Portugal.
Aveiro has always been linked to sea trade, fishing, and salt production.
About Raul Lino, Arq:
Portuguese architect, born in Lisbon on November 21, 1879, died July 14, 1974. Studied in Windsor, England (1890) and at the Hanover Institute in Germany. He worked in the studio of the German architect A. Haupt, a specialist in Portuguese medieval architecture.
He was a prolific author, responsible for more than 700 projects, but he became known above all for his written work in which he theorizes about Portuguese architecture. Of these works, A Casa Portuguesa (1929) stands out, where he tries to systematize the specific characteristics of Portuguese architecture and proposes models of houses to be adopted by designers. This work will have a great influence in the '30s and '40s.
He traveled extensively throughout Portugal and the colonies taking notes on architectural elements of traditional architecture that he would integrate into his projects.
His works include the O'Neil House, Cascais (1902), the Patudos House, Alpiarça (1904), the Cypress House, Sintra (1912), and the Tivoli Cinema, Lisbon (1924).
He was also appointed General Director of National Monuments in 1949, and was Director of the National Association of Fine Arts, from 1967.
