Barbacena Castle is located in the parish of Barbacena in the municipality of Elvas within the district of Portalegre. The castle’s history dates from 1273 and was originally built for military purposes with its strategic location overlooking the Alentejo plains towards Spain in the East. The castle is formally classified as a property of public interest (IIP) and is currently vacant.

The rehabilitation project was approved in April 2023 by the municipal and cultural authorities and envisages the castle’s transformation into a tourist property with thirteen suites, each with a private bathroom. The project also includes four generous social/communal rooms, a large dining room, a kitchen, lift, swimming pool, terraces, gardens and back-of-house. In addition, two typical Alentejo cottages, located on the square at the castle entrance, have also been approved for rehabilitation to provide two further suites.

The development is strategically located in the heart of the town of Barbacena, just a two-hour drive from Lisbon airport and fifteen kilometres from the main Lisbon-Madrid highway and from the Caia Dam. Barbacena lies in the DOC-classified Borba wine region, which produces some of the country’s best known wines.

Few castles in Portugal are privately owned and there is no alternative tourist accommodation in the Barbacena area. Combined with a general shortage of quality hotels in the Elvas-Estremoz-Evora corridor able to meet the growing demand from tourists, Barbacena Castle provides an investment opportunity in a unique landmark property with significant potential.

The project is eligible for co-funding from the national tourism association, Turismo de Portugal, which may be available to facilitate financing of the rehabilitation of the property. The IIP status, consolidated multi-ownership low density urban environment to the north and west and protected urban planning to the south and east will protect the value of the investment from potential competitors.

Barbacena Castle has all the hallmarks to become a new tourist magnet for the region, attracting visitors from all over the world, while providing employment and business opportunities to the local community.
