Cascais is a Portuguese town, the seat of the municipality of the same name, and is part of the district and metropolitan area of Lisbon. In 2018, the municipality of Cascais totaled 212,474 inhabitants spread over an area of 97.40 km². The municipality is subdivided into four parishes (Alcabideche, Carcavelos and Parede, Cascais and Estoril, and São Domingos de Rana). Despite its status as a village, it has a population that exceeds those of the cities of Seixal, Alverca, Póvoa, Loures, Sacavém, Vila Franca de Xira, and Costa da Caparica, being the fourth most populous village in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. Its origin as an independent entity dates back to the Village Charter, dated June 7, 1364, in which King D. Pedro I of Portugal separated it from the term of Sintra due to its economic development. Administratively, it only became independent in 1514, when it was granted its own charter. Occupied since the Paleolithic, and with an important archaeological heritage, the municipality was early turned to agricultural production, fishing and resource extraction. Also its strategic position on the Tagus Bar contributed to its importance, and today it has a vast military architectural heritage. Due to its natural and landscape values, both the town and the municipality experienced a surge in popularity that saw it become the preferred destination for Portuguese and foreign elites from the 19th century onwards. The arrival and electrification of the railroad was transcendental to the progress of the municipality, being the main factor for its urbanization from 1930 onwards. Since then, it has grown to become one of the main suburbs of Lisbon and one of the main tourist destinations in the country, sharing the phenomena of suburbanization and periurbanization that have been occurring in the rest of the metropolitan area, evident especially within the municipality.

The History of Cascais,

Cascais is a Portuguese village, home to the municipality (municipality) of the same name, which is part of the district and metropolitan area of Lisbon. In 2016, it totaled 210,889 inhabitants[1] spread over an area of 97.40 km². [3] The municipality is divided into four parishes (Alcabideche, Carcavelos and Parede, Cascais and Estoril and São Domingos de Rana). [4] Despite its status as a village, it has a population that exceeds those of the cities of Seixal, Alverca, Póvoa, Loures, Sacavém, Vila Franca de Xira and Costa da Caparica, being the fourth most populous village in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon. Its origin as an independent entity dates from the Charter of the Village of 7 June 1364, in which King Pedro I of Portugal separates it from the term of Sintra[5] by virtue of its economic development. [6] Administratively, it only became independent in 1514, when it is provided with its own foral. [6] Occupied since the Paleolithic, and with an important archaeological heritage, the county was from an early age focused on agricultural production, fishing and resource extraction. Its strategic position in Barra do Tejo has also contributed to its importance, today it has a vast military architectural heritage. For its natural and landscape values, both the village and the municipality experienced an outbreak of popularity that saw it become the preferred destination of portuguese and foreign elites from the 19th century. Since then, it has grown to assert itself as one of the main suburbs of Lisbon and one of the main tourist destinations of the country[7], sharing the phenomena of suburbanization and periurbanization that have taken place in the rest of the metropolitan area, evident mainly in the interior of the municipality.
