Description

HILLTOWN LODGE

Bellewstown, County Meath, Ireland

A delightful country home remarkably positioned within private grounds overlooking Bellewstown racecourse on the periphery of Bellewstown village and just 28 miles or 45 km’s from Dublin city centreIn all approximately 0.49 acre or 0.2 hectare of mature grounds with manicured lawns interspersed with specimen trees and shrubs.

Originally a lodge within the Hilltown estate the house has been extensively enlarged in recent years and now presents as a comfortable family home comprising some 2,260.42 square feet or 210 square metres of accommodation with 3 reception rooms and 4 bedrooms. Retaining the charm and character of the original lodge there is a rich historical provenance in connection to the Hilltown estate and Bellewstown racecourse. The architect Dawson Stelfox, the first Irish man to climb Mount Everest in 1993, designed the extension to allow comfortable family living whilst retaining the character of the original lodge. Inside the accommodation has a pleasant cottage character with a study, family room, kitchen, office and bedroom suite on the ground floor. The study is a comfy snug with a small fitted bar and open fireplace. The family room has an open fire too and includes a dining area, convenient to the kitchen. The kitchen is in a country-kitchen-style and overlooks the gardens. The ground floor bedroom is large and has double French doors opening out to the garden and an interconnecting door to an en-suite bathroom. It could equally be used as a large reception room. On the first floor there are 3 further bedrooms, one with a shower room en-suite and opening onto a terrace with superb elevated views over the racecourse and common. A family bathroom completes the accommodation.

The racecourse stands on the commonage of the Hill of Crockafotha, which has wonderful views sweeping north over Drogheda, the river Boyne and the Mourne Mountains and east to where the Irish Sea laps the coastline of Bettystown, Laytown and Gormanstown. The service road for the race course provides a useful roadway for local residents to walk a 2 km circuit and enjoy the spectacular views. Amenities in Bellewstown village include a primary school, the pub, GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) grounds and a golf course. The 18 hole golf course enjoys breathtaking views up to the Mourne mountains and over the Boyne valley and is literally down the road from Hilltown Lodge. There is also a Pitch and Putt course in the village. It is alleged that horse sports first took place in Bellewstown during the reign of King Conary the Great, High King of Ireland, about 2000 years ago.

The position of Hilltown Lodge is remarkable in itself, being on the edge of a racecourse within a village, but also due to how accessible it is. In a triangle between the towns of Duleek (4.5 miles or 7.3 km), Drogheda (6.9 miles or 11 km) and Balriggan (8.5 miles or 13.7 km) there is a huge array of amenities within easy reach. The fine beaches of Laytown and Bettystown are within a 15 to 20 minute driving distance.  Walking trails in the area include the Newgrange to the Battle of the Boyne walk along the river Boyne.  Equestrian enthusiasts are well catered for with racing immediately available, an array of riding schools or clubs in the area and hunting with the Louth and Ward Union. Baltry Golf Course is (10.4 miles or 16.8 km). The Dublin to Belfast railway can be accessed at nearby stations in Drogheda, Laytown and Gormanstown (5.5 miles or 8.9 km or about 10 minutes driving distance), with commuter trains to Dublin. The nearest M1 motorway intersection is about a 5 minute drive away. Dublin International airport 25 minutes driving time (21 miles or 34.4 miles), Dublin city centre 40 minutes driving time (28 miles or 45 km), Belfast International airport 1 hr 30 minutes driving time.
