Sub Region: Pauillac
1996 was a sterling vintage in Bordeaux, with particular affinity for the Left Bank. It essentially plays partner to 1995 which was equally celebrated on the Right Bank. Favouring the more classical styles of old school Bordeaux, many of the best wines are more cerebral, focused and restrained rather than opulent. More than two decades on from the vintage, Lafite-Rothschild 1996 continues to impress and dominate the field. It has retained a surprisingly dark, intense colour even after all these years in bottle, which should prepare one for how intense it is on the nose. Yet those waves of pencil shavings, blackberry, crushed stone and delicate spice still send a tingle down your spine. A more masculine style of Pauillac, there is a touch of forest floor through the entire experience and the overall effect is one that delivers immense satisfaction to a lover of classic, top quality Bordeaux.
