Ce palais, appelé « Maison italienne », a été commandé par le duc de Saldanha, pour la résidence de sa mère, après avoir engagé un architecte italien en 1830 pour le concevoir et le construire, sur la terrasse de Sintra, favorisant ainsi la vue sur le palais du village. Si le bâtiment et les jardins sont d’une rare beauté, les fresques, les carreaux et la vue le rendent absolument emblématique et unique.
Lors de son acquisition par les propriétaires actuels, le palais a fait l’objet d’une reconstruction complète à différents niveaux : ingénierie, architecture et décoration.
En ce qui concerne l’ingénierie, par exemple, un renforcement antisismique a été réalisé et une galerie souterraine a été construite, afin de permettre le passage de toutes les conduites de climatisation, de chauffage central et de machines modernes, afin de pouvoir moderniser et apporter du confort à cette œuvre architecturale.
La restauration des fresques a été réalisée par un artiste renommé Eduardo Filipe, considéré au niveau national et international comme l’un des meilleurs de la région. C’est pourquoi son travail, en Italie par exemple, est important.
En ce qui concerne les carreaux, c’est l’artiste hispano-argentin Cohen Fusé qui a peint les nouveaux carreaux qui ont dû être installés, car les carreaux d’origine étaient tellement détériorés qu’il est devenu impossible de les réhabiliter.
Le jardin a été entièrement restauré et conservé dans son état d’origine et la chapelle a également été entièrement restaurée, conservant encore des pièces datant des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles.
La décoration intérieure n’a pas été oubliée, car les détails font toute la différence, car elle a été confiée à Maria José Salavisa, qui jouissait d’un énorme prestige à l’époque. Plusieurs livres ont été publiés sur son travail et dans beaucoup d’entre eux, la « Casa Italiana » est considérée par elle comme l’une de ses œuvres préférées.

If the building and the gardens are of rare beauty, the frescoes, the tiles and the view make it absolutely iconic and unique.
Upon acquisition by the current owners, the palace underwent a complete reconstruction at various levels: engineering, architecture and decoration.
With regard to engineering, for example, an anti-seismic reinforcement was carried out and an underground gallery was built, so that all the air conditioning, central heating and modern machinery pipes could pass through, in order to be able to modernize and bring comfort to this architectural work.
The recovery of the frescoes was a restoration carried out by a renowned artist Eduardo Filipe considered nationally and internationally as one of the best in the area, which is why his work, in Italy for example, is extensive.
As far as the tiles are concerned, the Spanish-Argentine artist Cohen Fusé was the master responsible for painting the new ones that had to be installed, since the original ones were so deteriorated that rehabilitation became impossible.
The garden was completely recovered and maintained as the original and the Chapel was also completely recovered, still keeping pieces from the 18th/19th century.
The interior decoration was not forgotten, as the details make all the difference, having been contracted to Maria José Salavisa, having enormous prestige at the time.
