Palazzo dei Cecchi, whose origins date back to the 15th century, is located in the heart of the historic center of Siena, along the elegant Via di Pantaneto, once part of the Via Francigena route and a few steps from the famous Piazza del Campo.
Over the centuries, the palace has undergone significant transformations, culminating in the 18th century with interventions that gave the building its current aristocratic appearance, reflecting the European taste of the time. The Piano Nobile was designed to host sumptuous parties and receptions, welcoming illustrious personalities who visited Siena during their Grand Tour or participated in the famous international hunting parties, a tradition that had been established since the time of Violante of Bavaria, governor of Siena. The Ballroom, the beating heart of the celebrations, hosted the orchestra in a specially created balcony, while the adjacent rooms welcomed the most prestigious guests. The stuccos that adorn the rooms are an expression of the rocaille style, inspired by the Austrian and French trends in vogue at the time.
Via di Pantaneto owes its name to the word “pantano”, referring to the layer of mud and straw that the Sienese would spread on the pietra serena paving to dampen the noise made by passing horses and carriages, thus guaranteeing peace and quiet for the noble families who lived there.
