Meina (Mèina in Piedmontese and Lombard) is an Italian municipality of 2,517 inhabitants in the province of Novara in Piedmont. It is located on the Piedmontese shore of Lake Maggiore at the mouth of the Tiasca stream. Among the bourgeois families, we remember the Mondadori, owners of the villa of the same name, the Luoni and Galli from Novara, but also the Favini, from Milan, who commissioned the construction of Villa Carlotta, today Hotel Paradiso. During the nineteenth century, Meina became an important industrial center: being able to exploit the waters of the Tiasca, three important paper mills were established, all equipped with continuous steam engines. To these was added first, in 1854, a silk spinning mill and then, on the initiative of the entrepreneur Emilio Foltzer, a large factory of lubricating oils and greases for machines. Other factories of more modest size and importance were established in the territory of the municipality.

Fu nei secoli residenza o luogo di villeggiatura di molte famiglie appartenenti alla nobiltà e all’alta borghesia lombarda e piemontese: per antichità di possessi si distinsero i nobili Luatti o Lovati, accanto alle nobili famiglie Visconti di Massino e Sessa (estinta nei Gatti Grami), residenti però a Lesa. Più recentemente, dall’Ottocento, elessero Meina a luogo di villeggiatura le nobili famiglie Caccia-Piatti, Fossati de Regibus, Bossi Fedrigotti, ma soprattutto Faraggiana, che nella seconda metà del secolo edificarono un sontuoso palazzo con parco in stile neoclassico. Tra le famiglie borghesi invece si ricordano i Mondadori, proprietari dell’omonima villa, i novaresi Luoni e Galli, ma anche i Favini, milanesi, che commissionarono la costruzione di Villa Carlotta, oggi Hotel Paradiso. Nel corso dell’ottocento Meina diventa un rilevante centro industriale: potendo sfruttare le acque del Tiasca si insediarono tre importanti cartiere, tutte dotate di macchine a vapore continue. A queste si aggiunse prima, nel 1854, una filatura di seta e quindi, per iniziativa dell’imprenditore Emilio Foltzer, una grande fabbrica di oli lubrificanti e grassi per macchine. Nel territorio del comune si insediarono altre fabbriche di più modeste dimensioni e importanza.
