ARONA
The city of Arona is located on the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore and is crossed by the Vevera stream, which flows into the lake here. The surrounding area is covered by low hills of morainic origin (called ”motti”), incorporated into the Lagoni di Mercurago Natural Park where, in 1860, the first pile-dwelling settlement in Italy was discovered. Most of the municipal territory is also hilly, with altitudes that progressively degrade from north to south (and from west to east in the town centre) from 513 m in Motto Mirabello (near the Dagnente hamlet) to 195 m on the lake shore. The hilly reliefs are generally covered by woods that occupy over half of the Arona territory, 33% of the surface is covered by urbanized areas and 9% by meadows or pastures; smaller percentages are used for parks, gardens and green sports areas (2.3%), vegetable gardens, orchards, nurseries and vineyards (1.7%), uncultivated herbaceous land (1%) and arable land (0.4%). The first written documentation confirming the existence of a socially organized locality called Arona dates back to 979: this is a testimony that allows us to identify this date only by induction, so much so that some historians instead maintain that it is 963. In any case, the presence of man in this southern part of Lake Maggiore is confirmed much further back in time and dates back to prehistory; in fact, in the locality of Lagoni, near the hamlet of Mercurago, a pile-dwelling settlement dating back to the Bronze Age (active from the 18th to the 13th century BC) was discovered in 1860 and, in 1971-1972, a Golasecchian necropolis from the end of the 6th - beginning of the 5th century BC. Human traces are also documented in the peat bog of Motto San Carlo, where an arrowhead dating back to the Neolithic and the only object from the Copper Age were found. Of the wooden finds extracted in the nineteenth century, such as the remains of three wheels that turned in neutral on a central axle and were equipped with rudimentary non-concentric spokes and those of a canoe dug out of a tree trunk, only the plaster casts remain.

Il cascinale è stato ristrutturato mantenendo i tratti caratteristici di questa tipologia edilizia con le balconate a ballatoio rivolte verso il cortile interno.

ARONA
La città di Arona è situata sulla sponda piemontese del lago Maggiore ed è attraversata dal torrente Vevera, che qui sfocia nel lago. All’intorno si estendono i bassi rilievi collinari di origine morenica (chiamati ”motti”), inglobati nel Parco naturale dei Lagoni di Mercurago dove, nel 1860, venne individuato il primo insediamento palafitticolo rinvenuto in Italia. Anche la maggior parte del territorio comunale è di tipo collinare, con altitudini che vanno progressivamente degradando da nord verso sud (e da ovest verso est nel centro abitato) dai 513 m di Motto Mirabello (presso la frazione Dagnente) fino ai 195 m in riva al lago. I rilievi collinari sono in genere ricoperti da boschi che occupano oltre la metà del territorio aronese, sul 33% della superficie si stendono le aree urbanizzate e sul 9% prati o pascoli; percentuali minori sono destinate a parchi, giardini e aree verdi sportive (2,3%), orti, frutteti, vivai e vigneti (1,7%), incolti erbacei (1%) e seminativi (0,4%). La prima documentazione scritta che conferma l’esistenza di una località socialmente organizzata chiamata Arona risale al 979: si tratta di un’attestazione che consente di individuare tale data solo per induzione, tant’è che alcuni storici sostengono invece che si tratti del 963. In ogni caso la presenza dell’uomo in questa parte meridionale del Lago Maggiore è confermata ben più addietro nel tempo e risale alla preistoria; in località Lagoni infatti, presso la frazione di Mercurago, furono rinvenuti nel 1860 un insediamento palafitticolo risalente all’età del bronzo (attivo dal XVIII al XIII secolo a.C.) e, nel 1971-1972, una necropoli golasecchiana della fine del VI - inizi del V secolo a.C. Tracce umane sono documentate anche nella torbiera di Motto San Carlo, nella quale è stata rinvenuta una punta di freccia risalente al Neolitico e l’unico oggetto dell’Età del Rame. Dei reperti lignei estratti nell’Ottocento, come i resti di tre ruote che giravano in folle sopra un asse centrale ed erano dotate di rudimentali raggi non concentrici e quelli di una piroga scavata in un tronco d’albero, restano solo i calchi in gesso.
