Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Cabriolet
With the models Mercedes-Benz 250 S, 250 SE and 300 SE, Mercedes-Benz presented its new luxury class coupés and convertibles in 1965. After the distinctive tail fin era, a design language specified by Paul Bracq was presented, which relied on softer lines. To replace the pontoon series, a series with classically timeless elegance was created - the W 111 series (called the “big fin” among enthusiasts). This applies particularly to the convertible versions without a B-pillar in conjunction with the completely retractable frameless side windows. The models now had disc brakes all round, making them more advanced than many of their competitors. The success of the models prompted Mercedes-Benz in 1967 to offer the new, advanced engines with 2.8 l displacement and injection for the C variants. The 2.8 l engine is still in use today in its basic form. Hardly any bodyshell components from the sedans could be used for the bodies of the C models, so that these were mostly made by hand. The C models of the Mercedes-Benz W111 series were therefore around 50 percent more expensive than the sedans.
