1971 Ford Torino 500
The car was named after the city of Turin (Torino, in Italian), considered "the Italian Detroit". The Torino was initially an upscale variation of the intermediate sized Ford Fairlane, which Ford produced between 1962 and 1972.
For consignment a consignor stated grandmother to church on Sunday car and it may be accurate as only 18,951 miles have been clocked on her in its lifetime. It is in mid level Torino 500 trim all bathed in Ivy Green and little to no extras as to any exterior bling added on to this 4 door, and all original car for your taking.
Looking much like a "LITTLE OLD LADY CAR" it is bathed in all Ivy Green and has fairly well minded gaps. An early version of the coke bottle design slab sides it has a sporty-ness about it but remains in its utilitarian form too. The split egg crate grille with dual headlights on either pointed corner, and a nice pristine bumper framing this below, melts into the curved front quarters which flank a long hood. Not totally devoid of trimmings but some wheel well surrounds and a rocker trim are seen along with some glass surrounds in chrome. The paint shows a slight dulling and patina and has a few battle scars with some chip off and slight dents. Badging is all original and black wall tires are on with a dog dish wheel cover in the center.
All original inside with the green broadcloth diagonal checkered pattern seats surrounded by smooth green vinyl bolsters and door panels it looks like the day it left the showroom. A radio delete car the dash has just the basics when it comes to instrumentation, but there is not much to really have to monitor. All is very clean and like new including the green carpeting flooding the floors and gray headliner, nice and tight, above.
Again very well preserved and nicely presenting, the engine bay is like new, slight surface rust and little corrosion but all is all buttoned up. This 302ci V8 is original to this car as is the C4 3-speed automatic transmission on the back. Under a blue painted air cleaner cover, is a 2-barrel carburetor. Way back is a Ford 8-inch 2.79 gear rear axle.
Some surface rust on the usual suspects such as the driveshaft, rear leaf springs and rear pumpkin, but otherwise rust free and structurally sound. I can note independent coil spring suspension on front, and leaf springs for the rear along with drum brakes all around.
A turn of the key and it was off to church which is where this car unavoidably took us proving that a grandmother did indeed own this car! Actually, it performed well, all was working and it did just great on the test track showing little signs of weakness. All clean and all like new with those low miles dictating all this greatness.
Some bought cars to just do a little driving, and this car is the definition of that with a mere 18K plus miles, and its condition is unmatched. If you are looking for all original, this is it, all in its green glory, in our unassailable halls of the 4 wings of Classic Auto Mall.
