"Sometimes, we like to flex our muscles." Chevrolet showroom poster for the 1985 Monte Carlo SS

"In 1984, Dale Earnhardt switched from Ford to Chevy and the Monte Carlo SS starting kicking butt on the track, winning the Daytona 500 and Earnhardt's Wrangler-sponsored Monte snatching victory at Talladega." A 2019 Hagerty Media article provided some more background on the racing-inspired SS model: "In 1983, to better the Monte's aerodynamics on NASCAR's super speedways, Chevy developed a sleek aerodynamic nose for the coupe and developed the Super Sport model to get it on the street. It was option code RPO Z65, and it was the first Monte Carlo SS since 1971. Sales lasted until 1988, one model year beyond Buick's run of turbo Regals...."

Presented here is a beautifully preserved 1985 Monte Carlo SS in black over burgundy cloth. Showing just 70,000 miles on its odometer-under 2,000 miles per-year on average-the car's restrained and respectful use by its prior owners speaks to their pride in stewarding the car, and to its current, almost showroom-fresh, presentation. Collectors can be assured the "G" s present in the eighth position in the car's VIN verifying that it was born a true "Z65" SS.

The car's exterior black paint-one of only four colors offered-shines as though it had only just arrived from the factory. The condition of its red beltline striping, red "SS" front-license-plate logo, red grille-surround trim, red frear-spoiler trim, and red model designation emblems on the front fenders and rear decklid is equally impressive. These splashess of red on the black background add a touch of meanness to the car's look. The bumpers show no parking-lot damage, and the front lower chin spoiler is likewise free of abrasion. Only very light fingernail wear is present beneath the door handles Cabin glass and all lighting lenses are clear and undamaged.. Factory five-spoke wheels with chrome trim rings wear GoodYear Eagle GTII performance tires, a subtle reminder of the tire brand Earnhart drove into victory lane so many times.

Inside, the vertically pleated burgundy velour upholstery with burgundy vinyl trim complements the black body color. The impression of luxury is unmistakable. The front bucket seats-first offered in this model in 1985-are separated by a burgundy console housing the automatic-transmission shifter and an ample storage compartment to the rear. Burgundy is the dominant interior-trim color including carpeting (protected with rubber floor mats), seatbelts, door panels, and the car's dashboard. The dash design features squared off "pods" defining the instrument array (tachometer included) and the HVAC and audio-control center forward of the console. The black "SS" identified steering wheel is original to the car. A red dashboard Monte Carlo emblem facing the passenger seat visually ties into the Monte Carlo's exterior red striping.

Under the hood, the original 5.0-liter Chevrolet V8 commands the engine bay. All components are properly located and all surfaces are clean without being artificially shiny from the use of spray-on products. The V8's performance-engine note can be sampled in the accompanying video link. Likewise, the car's chassis viewed from below shows no components damaged from too-aggressive driving. The full-length dual exhaust system is properly mounted.

All original data and VIN tags are present as well as a number of factory-applied information labels.

The virtually showroom-new condition of this Monte Carlo SS is faithfully presented from every angle (including from below) in the more than 140 high-definition photographs and the short walk-around-and-startup video available at the GarageKeptMotors site. That said, we always encourage in-person, up-close inspections by interested parties-or their representatives-at our Grand Rapids, Michigan showroom. We ask only that advance appointments be made by phone or email so that we can devote our full attention to our visitors. Our showroom is not open to the public. Feel free to contact us by phone or email with any questions you may have,

This Monte Carlo SS's next owner will delight friends and neighbors with this sharp, well-preserved, and smooth-running piece of GM late-muscle-car-era history. The cars-and-coffee crowd certainly will be drawn to it. Because of all that, Hagerty felt compelled to issue a "don't-snooze" warning: "Finding a Monte Carlo SS... is possible, but it's getting harder every day. If you want to snatch up a great car at a palatable price, the time might be now."
